We all have things we worry about- bills to pay, financial obligations to fulfil, and responsibilities we have to bear. For some, our health, or the health of our loved ones. We also tend to worry a lot about our parents, spouses, children and siblings- or the lack thereof, depending on which side of the coin you’re on. Some are even deeper concerns- where is my life going? Am I going to be like this forever?’ ‘Will things ever change?’ ‘Am I raising these kids right?’ ‘Where did I go wrong?’ Things that we feel we can never let another know, for fear we may sound ridiculous or that we appear as not having control over our lives. You’d be surprised at how similar the things we worry about are, and these things are eating us up.
Before I continue with my thoughts, I would like to ask you to read this aloud to yourself:
Dear ______________
‘’Therefore I say unto you, take not thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body more than raiment? Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them, Are ye not much better than they? Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit to his stature? And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin: And yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which today is, and tomorrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, o ye of little faith? Therefore take no thought, saying what shall we eat? Or what shall we drink? Or Wherewithal shall we be clothed? (For after all these things the Gentiles seek :) for your heavenly Father knoweth that you have need of all these things. But seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. ‘’ (Matt 6: 25-33 KJV)
Love,
Jesus.
This scripture means so much to me at this stage of my life. I believe it is a scripture that we all should be meditating on from time to time. Jesus says take no thought; that is, don’t even think about it. Instead of worry, which does not add any value to your life, He is asking you to seek the Kingdom of God and His righteousness. I am not too concerned about the ‘taking no thought’ part, what challenges me is the ‘seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness’ part. It means putting God and His Kingdom first in all you do.
It’s easy to say for the sake of semantics to interpret seek ye first the kingdom of God as pursuing righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Ghost. Conveniently, I have done so for years. But really now that I think about it, seeking first the kingdom of God means reaching out and being a blessing to people in whichever way you can- giving, counseling people, or just being there for them, particularly those that can never repay you. This is the key to getting what you want from God. Jesus says seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and every other thing shall be added unto you.
Many of us, including me desire to win souls for the Kingdom, but we just don’t know how. We many times feel so helpless, timid and at best, shy because we think our experiences are not worth sharing, it may not make any sense, or it’s simply outdated.
God has placed in every one’s heart a desire to reach out to others and a special gift that each one has to offer the other. It may be a painful experience that God has helped, or is helping you to overcome. Most times it is. Maybe in a relationship, or in raising your children or overcoming workplace adversaries or even your growing up years. It may be something you’ve lost that God has restored, or situations where God has helped you through. It may be a testimony or an experience. It may even be a mistake. Or a health condition. It may be a battle you’re currently fighting. It may be anything.
What I am saying in essence is that you have something to offer. Don’t stop sharing it. You may be the only voice of hope a person will ever have. The only Bible someone may ever read on the way to salvation may be your story. Just share your story, and give God the glory. Trust the Spirit of God to do the rest. There is nothing more gratifying than knowing that someone’s life has been changed through you. No matter how little the change may appear to be.
Some of you may be too shy to speak, but you can listen. You can cook. You can hold a hand. You can be there. The world needs what you have now than ever before. The more you give away what you really desire- which in many cases is not what you think you need, the more you get what you need and more.
Financial poverty is the least of all problems, because all the poor man thinks will solve his problem is money. When the poor man has a meal and his basic needs are met, he is thankful, and continues the next day. The real problem is when you have the things that money can buy and like all souls do, realize that it was not what you were looking for- then what next? I believe the solution to solving the problem of anxiety is to pray, and serve. Give your time and energy to serving others, to meeting needs. Give your gifts and talents to those that cannot repay you. Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and every other thing shall be added unto you.
Lord I ask that you help me. Holy Spirit help me. Help me to serve people. Help me to win souls. Help me to teach them that true riches come only from serving others. In Jesus’ mighty name. Amen
