My name is Isioma Wilcox married to Joseph Wilcox; we got married on the 18th and 19th August 2006.
Our Journey: We were both in our 30s when we got married, so we wanted kids immediately but we were not so lucky. We waited till our first anniversary and our journey of tests and investigations into our inability to have children began.
After series of tests on me and my husband in different hospitals the doctors said we were both fine and did not know why we were not getting pregnant so their verdict was 'unexplainable infertility'.
Surprise, Surprise? In 2009 or so I got pregnant just like that without any intervention but it was only for 6 weeks. After this there was no more. We tried everything; we had 4 sessions of intrauterine insemination (IUI) which is a procedure that involves placing sperm inside a woman's uterus to facilitate conception, yet nothing.
Other Options: We then decided to adopt. All we wanted was a baby to call ours- we applied at the Federal Capital Territory, Ondo, and Cross Rivers states. Two orphanages; one in the east and the other in the north offered us babies but at a price; which we declined because the process was laden with illegality.
We then decided in 2011 to have an In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) done. IVF is a process by which an egg is fertilized by sperm outside the body. Our good doctor suggested I have a myomectomy, which is the surgical removal of fibroids from the uterus done to increase our chances, which we did yet the IVF failed.
Global Pursuits: Early 2012, my husband had always wanted to get an international post- graduate degree so we decided he should go with the direction of God of course. Different people had their own opinions about the move but we knew we had God with us.
At this time our application for adoption in Cross River state was in its advanced stage and I kept following up. We had done all that was required but we were now on the waiting list for the State Government approval.
Permit me to digress a little- my husband and I are one of those people who feel our Pastor- Pastor Good heart Obi Ekwueme does too much and should be given a breathing space and for this reason we never went to him personally to discuss our issue. I fell in love with his wife when I attended the first pre marital class in my church, she was nice to me even when she knew I was catholic and she became my go- to Pastor.
Morning Glory: When my husband came to Nigeria on holiday we had no plan to see pastor when we went for our church prayer meeting Morning Glory that beautiful Saturday in June. We just had a leading to talk to him that morning about our situation with the adoption and Pastor was so warm and listened to us. He gave his support to adoption but held us both in front of the altar in church there then and said a simple prayer; assuring us that the six week period of my husband's break was long enough for God to do what he wants to do. I went home that morning excited and relieved - I knew in my spirit that something had happened. That very month my period ceased and I was declared pregnant 6 weeks after.
My pregnancy was a different story all together, I had no morning sickness did not experience all the symptoms that come with pregnancy. I was fine from day one. God has been very kind to me.
What I have learnt: All those years of secret tears, praying, fasting, and sacrificial giving have all paid off. They were the tiny steps we were making to our destination of parenthood. I learnt during my period of waiting to trust God completely. I knew deep down within me that God loved me, whether I had a child or not, and that God had a beautiful plan for my life. This increased my faith and love for Him.
I had my moments of doubts and questions but it did not shake my belief in God. God turned our mourning into dancing and test into testimony. God turned everything around for our good and have us a new song- We can now laugh.
We bless God for the safe delivery of our son- Jason Tamunotekena Wilcox. whose pregnancy was the most amazing ever , I was never sick or bedridden , I carried the pregnancy well and everyone around me could testify that this it was God’s doing.
I encourage every woman that is believing God for a blessing like this to hold fast to God, the ‘when’ may not be known but God assures us that “none shall be barren” and when God speaks hit is with authority that cannot be contested.
